Object Lessons: Romance, Violation, and Female Adolescent Sexual Desire

When reading Object Lessons: Romance, Violation, and Female Adolescent Sexual Desire by: Deborah L. Tolman I could not help to get back to my roots of One in Four. For those who do not know what One in Four (http://www.oneinfourusa.org/) is, it's an all male group that teaches other males (or in the case or RIC everyone) about rape education. We put on an hour long presentation where we talk about rape and sexually assault and how to help a women when she goes though something as bad as rape.

So when reading this article I could not help to think about all I have learn from One in Four. When Deborah L. Tolman interviewed 16 year old Isabel who is considered "asexual" because she's white and middle class, I went back to one of my training session where we had something similar to what happen there.

Tolman is trying to show how society sees the objectification that females have to go thought each and everyday. As a male I will never know the pain that females go though with society telling them how to look. Where for a male it's o.k how ever you look.

New Meida

For some reason my laptop would not let me open up the readings. So I am going off what everyone else is saying in their blogs. It's funny if you think of it, I am getting a summary off other people blogs as we talk about new media. I find myself online getting all my information from applying for jobs to staying up in current news. I find myself at looking at www.weei.com where I get all my Boston sports news.

It's also funny on how face book started to where it stands now. The main goal was for college kids to stay in touch in a class at Harvard. Now it has become an addition for people who have to be on the website all the time.

New media has taken over our lives whether we like it or not. It came into our lives fast and is going to be for ever changing. Look at how many people have cell phones and for the matter with the internet on their phones. We live in such a teach savvy world it's almost frighting. We are at a point where we don't even have to leave our bed's in the morning, as people can go to work right from their lap top. That's a scary thought in my mind.

Glee...

When watching Glee, for the first full time I thought the cast was great. Someone talked about their blog, showing were teenage stands in the media. I felt that the show was trying to break the "norms" of how a glee club is seen by society. I was a big fan of the fact that they had Artie in a wheelchair. It made me think back to my high school, where my best friend was in a wheelchair because he had CP, and I did my best to make him feel that he fit in with everyone else which he did.

I watched the episode where they needed to rise money so they could go to regional. They all had to sit in a wheelchair for 2 weeks to see how Artie felt, and did a wheelchair number on stage.

I love how you had your "typical" dad speech to his son (Kurt). The father will always come to their rescues. I think in everyone high school you have one guy who is "gay" which is fine by me, but people are always trying ti fit in.

At the same time the show also conform to the social norms, like the cheerleaders who are not smart. When the truth of the matter is that most cheerleader are very smart.

My favorite person in the show was Becky who has down syndrome.

The show goes back in-forth between friends being friends which happens all day and everyday in high school.

All in all, I am not a huge fan of musical so I do not see me watching Glee in the future.

Glee

I have never seen Glee till now, it may be because I don't watch a lot of TV and when I do I watch sports. I only got to catch a little bit of the show, and I was left kinda in a frazzle. I laughed at some points and at other points I thought to myself that this would never happen. When I was in high school everyone got along. I am interested in watching a full show but due to my lap top has no sound I am going to have to wait to add to this blog till tomorrow before class.

Hip Hop

When reading these two articles on the Hip Hop culture were a very hard read. Something like Hip Hop is not my strong point. I do understand that early Hip Hop stood for something. I just don't like where Hip Hop has gone. They way they talk about girls and what they do for fun is so deeming to me.

In the first article Hip-Hop, Mass Media and 21st Century Colonization by Hip-Hop, Mass Media and 21st Century Colonization says "Like mass media and popular culture, hip-hop too is often removed from its proper context as the cultural expression of a domestically-held internal colony otherwise known as Black America." Although I do agree with that statement, I feel as if Hip Hop as lost it's roots for where it started. What people "Rap" about is just so wrong in today society giving kids the wrong idea on what a role model truly is.

I do listen to Hip Hop but its "underground rap" my favorite person is Brother Ali. I like him because in his songs he talks about his real life.

Maybe because main stream Hip Hop is something I do not like, I had a hard time with this read.

Coming of Age with the Internet

When reading McMillian and Morrison's article I was thinking to myself, how would my dad read this. Being a communication major the internet plays a huge role in what I want to do with my life. Now if I was my dad, reading this I would be so lost. My dad is very old school and does not even know how to turn a computer on never mind getting onto the internet. At his job he does not have to worry about the internet so he has no interested in what the internet. When my dad wants to listen to me doing the play by play on the internet for Rhode Island College sports, my mom has to set him up.

On the other hand the internet plays a huge role in my life. It is where I get my news on whats going on in the world to whats going on in the sports world. I keep up with my friends and some of my family with websites like facebook.

I also love writing sports article where my latest can be found here. I take pride in what goes on in the internet. Going back to my dad I am sure my mom will have to set everything up for him so he can read it.

A Tangle of Discourses by Rebecca C. Raby

When reading A Tangle of Discourses by Rebecca C. Raby, I had a lot of things running though my head. I find it to be funny, when older people say things like these damn teenagers, and there rocking role. When in the reality of it all is the teenagers are the face of this world. They gave us technology and who know what tomorrow will bring for us.

We have or will be a teenager at some-point, and trying to find out you really are can be the toughest time of your life.

In the mist of it all, we are all different people who should be happy with who we are.

Media Literacy

Before I started to Google Media Literary, I thought to myself for someone who wants to get into the media in one way or other I hope this can only end good. Wikipedia says that this is Media Literary. Now depending on the reader and or viewer, will be how someone will read this. When we were all younger we watched movies that more meaning then what we know. Take The Wizard of Oz, there is so much more meaning behind it then what most people know. Take a look it you want to know more.

From my stand of point I have always been picking media apart, even from a young age. I knew with the help of my mom and dad, what is real or not.

Unleaning the Myths That Blind Us

"Unlearning the Myths That Blind Us" by Linda Christensen, is the prefect title for what she wanted to talk about. Christensen talks about how the younger generations have a lot more media they have to deal with. For example the cartoons, movies, and books that children view on a day to say basic is way more then what their parents have ever seen. Christensen then goes on to talk about how racism, sexism, and classicism plays a factor in today childhood. It may be happening discretely but it is something that plays a major role in a child's life as they get older. An example is, when I was a senior in high school my English teacher told me to write a paper on work ethics. I started my paper with "Who lives in a pineapple under the sea, SpongeBob SquarePants." I talked about hos SpongeBob is always excited to go to work everyday, but still made time to hang out with a whole slue of people. Then there are shows and movies out there that teach children about sexism, racism, and classicism.

A way to put a stop to what your children are getting exposed too, is to simply oversea what your kid is watching, and who they are hanging out with.

When I was 13

When I was thirteen, I was just leaving middle school and getting ready to make the leap to high school. It was a very time in my life, I just had become a teen-angle and now I was on my way to bigger and better things. I knew that high school was going to be different, but with the help of my last year in middle school I could make that jump a little bit easier. I just got done playing my last year of middle school hockey for the Wareham Middle School Vikings, and was on my way to becoming a member of the varsity team at my high school that next year. When I was thirteen, I had some great friends and even better family. I was thirteen, and did not have a worry in the world.
